How strong will West Virginia University’s football team be in the 2013 season?
I don’t have any idea. I haven’t seen the Mountaineers in spring practice. With practice open to the media for just the first 30 minutes and only on some days, I think it would have been a waste of my time.
Dana Holgorsen, in his third year as WVU’s head coach, did not see fit to allow reporters to see any scrimmages so far as I know. That’s certainly his right to do so.
But his last nine predecessors did allow the media to watch their scrimmages not only in the spring but during the fall practice season if they wanted.
So I’m going into Saturday’s intrasquad game, winding up spring practice, with no knowledge of the previous 14 days of skirmishing. Other media types are believed to be similarly positioned.
In a news conference late last week, Holgorsen did say some things that might interest you. He even revealed a tentative two-deep player roster. But he cautioned that it could change almost daily.
The Mountaineers were scheduled to hold their very first full scrimmage on Tuesday of this week. They had staged some mini-scrimmages.
“These have gone well,” Holgorsen said.
“We have been focusing way more on fundamentals and teaching, and we’re running a lot of team reps.”
Evaluating has been mixed in with the teaching by the coaches, three of whom replaced departures since the end of last season.
The head man continued, “We are not prepared to name any starters yet. And in my mind, I am not prepared to figure out what type of team we will have yet.
“I do like the attention and focus that these guys have been playing with. When they come in, they are eager to learn.”
In his latest news conference, Holgorsen declared that “Nobody thinks we are any good.” He apparently offered no explanation for that statement.
But he did follow up with this:
“I encourage our guys not to read anything online, on the message boards (on the Internet) or any other publications. No one knows what our team is going to be like (this coming fall).
“The only people that can dictate that are our coaches and players. We have to come in and just get better every day.”
