West Virginia Republican chairman Mike Stuart says he’ll step down in May after serving half of his four-year term on the job.

Stuart said in a message to Republicans Thursday that the party needs someone to devote a full-time effort to the job. He says details to pick a successor will be announced soon.

Stuart was elected in July 2010 to a four-year term. He says his resignation will take effect May 9.

He says in his two years, the party has modernized its facilities and infrastructure. He pointed out that the party has more members in the House of Delegates than since the 1970s.

Stuart is an attorney with Steptoe & Johnson. He says he is “looking forward to being a temporary observer rather than a direct participant in the political process.”
