Carol Smith

Carol Ann Bunner Smith, 72, of Fairmont passed away Wednesday (Dec. 11, 2013) at Ruby Memorial Hospital, Morgantown.

She was born March 15, 1941, in Marion County, a daughter of the late Randolph R. Bunner and Gladene Kinkaid Bunner.

Carol was a secretary at West Virginia University, College of Commerce and also the political science department. While at WVU, she was also a temporary secretary in the President’s office. She was also previously employed at Westinghouse of Fairmont, the Marion County Courthouse record room and at the West Virginia Department of Highways office, materials lab in Fairmont. She was a member of the Church of Christ and a graduate of Morgantown High School, class of 1959.

She was blessed with parents and in-laws who loved the Lord. She loved her family, and her grandsons were her treasure. Her numerous nieces and nephews were always very close to her. She enjoyed traveling, swimming, antique hunting and especially trips with her husband Oce to various political affairs and conferences.

Survivors include her husband, Oce Worthington Smith Jr., sergeant at arms of the West Virginia House of Delegates, whom she married Feb. 25, 1966; a son, Oce “Trey” Smith III and wife Michelle; and two grandsons, Oce “Sonny” Smith IV and Joseph David Smith, both of Westover. Three sisters survive, Lois Hawley of Smithtown Community; Ernestine Jennings of Cranberry Township, Pa.; and Judith Williams and husband Ronald of Smithtown Community. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Gerald Bunner; sister, Sara Adams; and brothers-in-law, James Hawley and Martin Jennings.

The Smith family has entrusted the Ford Funeral Home, R. C. Jones Chapel, 1410 Country Club Road, Fairmont, WV 26554 with funeral arrangements. Friends may call at the funeral home on Saturday from 3-8 p.m. and Sunday from 1-2 p.m. Services will be held at the funeral home at 2 p.m. Sunday with Evangelist Matt Lowe and Pastor Janice Smith officiating. The committal service will follow in Monumental Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Jason Williams, Jim Hawley, Joe Dennis, Mark Estlack, Robert Stultz and the Honorable Mike Caputo. Honorary pallbearers will include the Honorable Alan Mollahan, Jim Moon, John Veasey and Robin Stultz.

  • Nuke-arms grade stock has been cut by Iran

    Iran has converted three quarters of a nuclear stockpile that it could have turned quickly into weapons-grade uranium into less volatile forms and is well on the way toward transforming the rest, the U.N. atomic agency reported Thursday.
    The development — agreed to by Iran under a nuclear deal it struck late last year with six world powers — leaves Tehran with substantially less of the 20-percent enriched uranium that it would need for a nuclear warhead.
