Ronald Carpenter

Ronald E. Carpenter, 41, of Fairmont, passed away Monday (Nov. 4, 2013) at his home.

He was born Oct. 29, 1972, to the late Melanie S. Carpenter Phillips and the late Ronald E. Johnson.

Ron was a 1990 graduate of Fairmont Senior High School, where he was an accomplished athlete. He was a three-sport letterman participating in football, wrestling and track. In football, Ron earned postseason honors: first team All-North Central Athletic Conference, honorable mention All-State football and played in the North-South All-Star Game as a senior. In wrestling, Ron won the regional championship twice and qualified for the West Virginia State Championships both years. In track, Ron held the Fairmont Senior High school record in shot put for many years and qualified for the West Virginia state finals twice. Ron finished two years in West Virginia’s top five, in both wrestling and shot put. Ron also attended Marshall University. He was a cook and chef by trade, having worked for several restaurants (Fairmont Field Club, Susi-Q’s and others), as well as being on the culinary staff of professional sports organizations while living in Charlotte, N.C. Ron was a former member of Highland Avenue U.M. Church in Bellview.

He was a very loving and kindhearted person, and was an avid sports fan. The Washington Redskins and the Carolina Panthers were among his favorites, along with other West Virginia teams.

Ronald is survived by his half-sister, Veronica E. Cirella of Long Island, N.Y.; a great-aunt, Esther G. Moore; an uncle, Alan R. Carpenter and his wife JoAnn; a great-uncle, Van Johnson and his wife Sherry; cousins, Samantha Hinton, Christopher Carpenter and Jenna Carpenter; a great-aunt, Roby Page of Core; and a great-aunt, Cora Cross of Fairmont.

Ronald had a host of extended family and friends, including his stepmother, Annie E. Little, and her daughter Stefanie; and a special friend, Tracey Kennedy.

“Little Ronnie,” as he was affectionately known by his family, will be missed by everyone who knew him and encountered his kindness and gracious smile.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother, Donald; his paternal grandfather, James O. Carpenter Jr.; his paternal grandmother, Leevone P. Boggs; and his maternal grandmother, Dorothy Cosby. Ron loved and cared for both of them dearly. He was also preceded in death by an aunt, Joyce Johnson; and a niece, Julie Cirella.

The Ronald E. Carpenter Memorial Fund has been established at WesBanco Bank, and contributions may be made at any WesBanco Bank branch.

A service will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday at Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens Mausoleum in Westover.

Condolences may be sent online to the family at www.domicofh.com.

  • Nuke-arms grade stock has been cut by Iran

Iran has converted three quarters of a nuclear stockpile that it could have turned quickly into weapons-grade uranium into less volatile forms and is well on the way toward transforming the rest, the U.N. atomic agency reported Thursday.
The development — agreed to by Iran under a nuclear deal it struck late last year with six world powers — leaves Tehran with substantially less of the 20-percent enriched uranium that it would need for a nuclear warhead.
