Bruce Trent Atwood, 55, of Fairmont, passed away Friday (Dec. 27, 2013) in his residence.
He was born May 19, 1958, in Pikeville, Ky., a son of the late Jack Dempsey Atwood and the late Shelby “Williams” Crews.
Mr. Atwood was a 1976 honors graduate of Matewan High School in Matewan. He also graduated from Pikeville College in 1979 with a degree in mining technology. Bruce was a disabled coal miner, and had worked with Jewel’s Smokeless Coal Co. in Virginia. While working, he was a member of the Rescue Safety Team, which won the National Mining Rescue Award.
He is survived by a daughter, Melinda Atwood, of an unknown address; a brother, Ronald and his wife Vickie Atwood of Sacramento, Calif.; and three sisters, Elaine Atwood of Chicago, Ill., Dana Atwood of Lexington, Ky., and Kimberly Elliott of Hurricane. He is also survived by many aunts, nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his two brothers, Jack Atwood Jr. and Donald Barry Atwood.
The family has chosen cremation for Mr. Atwood, and entrusted the arrangements to Ford Funeral Home, 201 Columbia St., Fairmont.
