Robert “Bob” Saunders, 72, of Turkey Knob near Worthington, passed away peacefully at home with his loving family Friday (Dec. 27, 2013) after a two-year battle with cancer.
He was born Nov. 29, 1941, near Hutchinson, a son of the late Dennis (Ted) and Grace Squires Saunders.
Bob was a graduate of Monongah High School Class of 1960. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Vietnam era, 1964-69. He retired from Consol’s Robinson Run coal mine in 1998 after 27 years of service. He was a member of the UMWA Local 1501.
He enjoyed watching and listening to the WVU and local high school football games. He also enjoyed fishing on the Elk River, where he was an avid fly fisherman. He was a Methodist.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Sandra Harbert Saunders; one son, James Saunders and wife Jennifer of Clarksburg, Md.; one daughter, Tara Henderson and husband Cullen of Fairfax, Va.; two grandchildren, Jordan Saunders and Kyle Henderson; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Roger and Shirley Harbert, Ronald and Rosemary Tetrick, Jerry and Lois Moore, and Raymond McIntire.
He has several nieces and nephews, Chris McIntire and wife Paula, Mike McIntire and wife Lisa, Randy McIntire and wife Debbie, Kathy McIntire, Linda Saunders King and husband Bill, and Becky Watkins and husband Randy. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, John Rollin Saunders (infant) and Ralph “Ed” Saunders; his first wife, Nancy Robinson, and second wife, Dorcas Campbell; and one sister, Mary Louise McIntire.
In keeping with the wishes of the deceased, his body will be cremated. A private family viewing has taken place at Harmer Funeral Home, Shinnston.
