— Robert Charles Wilson, 95, of Barrackville, passed away Friday (Dec. 27, 2013) at the St. Barbara’s Nursing Home in Monongah.

He was born June 23, 1918, in Barrackville, a son of the late Esta and Nancy Tennant Wilson.

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Margaret Collins Wilson, and his son, David Lee Wilson, both of Barrackville.

Mr. Wilson was a 1936 graduate of Barrackville High School, as well as a graduate of Fairmont Business College. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during World War II as a staff sergeant with Gen. Patton’s Third Army with 12 troops under his direction. Robert was the first peace time draftee in the Roosevelt’s peace time army prior to World War II, and continued to serve during the entire war. Having fought in the Battle of the Bulge, he was honored with the Battle of the Bulge Veterans Award, and received the Bronze Star in 2004. He was a member and a deacon of Katy Baptist Church in Katy. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 17. Robert retired from the Barrackville mines, where he ran the shipping department for 39 years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant son, Robert Charles Wilson Jr.

The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to Katy Baptist Church, 34 Newcastlelane, Farmington, WV 26571, in Robert’s memory.

Friends and family may call Ford Funeral Home, R.C. Jones Chapel, 1410 Country Club Road, Fairmont, from 1-5 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Monday. Mr. Wilson will lie in state from 10-11 a.m. Tuesday at Katy Baptist Church in Farmington. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Katy Baptist Church with Pastor Marvin Stalnaker officiating. Interment will follow at Barrackville Baptist Cemetery in Barrackville. Military rites will be held at graveside by the Marion County Military Council.
