Eugene Shuttlesworth

Eugene Alfred Shuttlesworth, 96, of Morgantown, died at 10 p.m. Tuesday (Dec. 31, 2013), at Mapleshire Nursing & Rehabilitation Center following a brief illness.

He was born in Little Falls on May 9, 1917, the son of the late Alonzo L. Shuttlesworth and Mabel Kincaid Shuttlesworth.

He served in the U.S. Army infantry in the European Theater during World War II from 1944 through 1946, where he was wounded in action and received the Purple Heart award. After his discharge from the hospital in France, he served with the occupation forces in Germany.

Following his military discharge, he spent his working life in sales, the bulk of the time with Cowan Baking Co. in Morgantown and as a road salesman with Truck Equipment Warehouse and Power Break Heavy Duty Truck Parts. He led a very active life and was particularly involved with his church activities with the Morgantown Church of Christ. He was also an active member of the local Veterans Center in Westover.

He is survived by two sons, Richard Shuttlesworth and his wife Donna of Point Marion, Pa., and Gerald Shuttlesworth and his wife Pamela of Hopwood, Pa.; five grandchildren, Joseph Brown of Morgantown, Kevin Brown and his wife Marcie of Portage, Pa., Rebecca Dean and her husband Bruce of New Market, Md., Anne Shuttlesworth and her husband Philip Watson of Vero Beach, Fla., and Thomas Shuttlesworth and his wife Rachel of Uniontown, Pa.; and eight great-grandchildren, Anthony Brown, Brandon Brown, Shelby Brown, Leslie Brown, Kevin Brown, Brett Dean, Alexandra Dean and Elexia Watson.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen Marie Ice Shuttlesworth, in 1988, and his second wife, Leona DeWitt Chipps Shuttlesworth, in 2002; three brothers, Wayne, Paul and Ralph; and two sisters, Ruth and Helen.

Family and friends will be received at Dering-Henson Funeral Home, 156 Foundry St., Morgantown, from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Friday and from 10 a.m. on Saturday until the funeral service at 11 a.m  at the Morgantown Church of Christ, 361 Scott Ave., Morgantown, with Minister Matt Lowe officiating. Internment will be at Beverly Hills Memorial Cemetery on Fairmont Road, in Morgantown.

  • Nuke-arms grade stock has been cut by Iran

    Iran has converted three quarters of a nuclear stockpile that it could have turned quickly into weapons-grade uranium into less volatile forms and is well on the way toward transforming the rest, the U.N. atomic agency reported Thursday.
    The development — agreed to by Iran under a nuclear deal it struck late last year with six world powers — leaves Tehran with substantially less of the 20-percent enriched uranium that it would need for a nuclear warhead.
