Simon Paul Matthews Jr., 75, of Monongah, passed away Tuesday (Jan. 7, 2014), at his home.
He was born July 6, 1938, in Farmington, son of the late Simon Paul Matthews Sr. and Marguerite (Tropea) Matthews.
Mr. Matthews was a 1956 graduate of Monongah High School, a graduate of Fairmont State College with a degree in education, and obtained his master’s degree from West Virginia University. He retired in 1988 from Marion County Schools after 30 years of service. Mr. Matthews taught at Farmington High School, Monongah High School and Miller Junior High School. He also coached football, basketball and track at Monongah High School and Farmington High School.
He was a businessman, owning and operating several businesses with his wife Shirley in Monongah. He was a member of the Democratic Men’s Club and the Elks Club in Fairmont, a former mayor of Monongah, a Realtor, contractor, a member of the Monongah Volunteer Fire Department and an active member of the GOCAT organization.
Simon is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Shirley S. Matthews of Monongah; a daughter, Paulah Matthews Sloan and husband Dave of Monongah; a son, Todd Matthews Sr. and wife Lisa of Colorado Springs, Colo.; grandchildren, Brittney and Brock Sloan of Monongah, Todd Matthews Jr. and wife Chelsea of Clearwater, Fla., Stefanie Matthews of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Tristan and Brendan Matthews and their mother Cami Handlan of Fairmont. He is also survived by his sisters, Rose Matthews Ilich and husband Niko of Fairmont, and Muggy Matthews Stottlemire and husband Kenny of Fairmont; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
In addition to his parents, Simon was preceded in death by his son, Paul David Matthews; and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Paul and Davinna Smith.
The family would like to thank Dr. Karen MacKay, Nadia O’Hearn and the staff of Fairmont Dialysis Center (Fresenius Medical Care) and Amedisys Hospice Care for all of their compassion and kindness.
Mr. Matthews’ family will receive friends at Domico Funeral Home, 414 Gaston Ave. in Fairmont, from 10 to 8 p.m. Friday and 8 to 10 a.m. Saturday. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home with Pastor Danny DeNoon and Pastor John Snyder officiating. Burial will follow at the Holy Cross Cemetery in Clarksburg. The pallbearers will include Brock Sloan, Todd Matthews Jr., Tristan Matthews, Brendan Matthews, Jason Stalnaker and Jonathan Stalnaker.
