Wannalee Vandergrift

Wannalee (Keener) Vandergrift, 85, of Quiet Dell Community, Fairmont, passed away Friday (Nov. 29, 2013) at Pierpont Center at Fairmont surrounded by her loving family.

She was born in Mt. Harmony, on July 30, 1928, a daughter of the late Willie M. and Mary Ruth (Fletcher) Keener.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 51 years, Denzil “Sonny” Theodore Vandergrift, in September of 2001.

Wannalee was a loving homemaker, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was a member of Victory Baptist Church and the Quiet Dell Community Association. She enjoyed tending to flowers, gardening and spending time with her loving family.

She is survived by two sons, Rodger D. Vandergrift and his wife Sarah of Fairmont, and Randy L. Vandergrift and his wife Brenda of Fairmont; one daughter, Barbara Renee Wert and her husband Art of Milroy, Pa.; six grandchildren, Victoria Pyle and her husband John, Terry Vandergrift, Nina Cowger and her husband Scott, Alyssa Vandergrift, William “Cody” Vandergrift and Emily Sheaffer and her husband Michael; and six great-grandchildren, Austin Cowger, Braydon Cowger, Sadie Cowger, Hannah Pyles, Elizabeth Heldreth and Dylan Heldreth.

Also surviving is a brother, Ed Keener and his wife Andrea of Ohio; a sister, Rosaleen Heil of Wheeling; three sisters-in-law, Martha (Vandergrift) Bissell, Mary Jean (Vandergrift) Abel and her husband Wayne, and Lucy Vandergrift; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Sonny Lee Vandergrift; two brothers, Owen E. Keener and William Keener; and six sisters, Kathern Keener, Mary McCourt and her husband Otha, Betty Harbert and her husband Steve, Nelda Rush and her husband Delbert, Myrtle Sloan and her husband Charles, and Conley Keener.

Family and friends may call at Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont, today from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Monday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Monday at 1 p.m. with Pastor Bob Barker officiating. Interment will follow at Pleasant Hills/ Nuzum Cemetery in Marion County.

  • Nuke-arms grade stock has been cut by Iran

    Iran has converted three quarters of a nuclear stockpile that it could have turned quickly into weapons-grade uranium into less volatile forms and is well on the way toward transforming the rest, the U.N. atomic agency reported Thursday.
    The development — agreed to by Iran under a nuclear deal it struck late last year with six world powers — leaves Tehran with substantially less of the 20-percent enriched uranium that it would need for a nuclear warhead.
