William ‘Bob’ Rider

— There will be services at 11 a.m. Friday at Prince of Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Poland, Ohio, for William R. “Bob” Rider, 92, who died Sunday (March 17, 2013) at home.

He was born Oct. 10, 1920, in Jane Lew, the eldest son of Ethel I. and Pete M. Rider. Bob was raised in Rivesville, and after being married, he moved to Fairmont.

He was a graduate of West Fairmont High School.

Bob then received a bachelor of science degree in education from Fairmont State College, where he was president of Tau Beta Iota fraternity. He then earned a master’s in education from West Virginia University. Bob taught at Mannington, Monongah and East Fairmont high schools in West Virginia from 1946 until moving to Niles, Ohio, in 1955, where he taught social studies at Warren Harding High School and then taught history, civics and geography at East Junior High. While teaching there, he won the Freedom Foundation George Washington Honor Medal Award. Bob retired in 1985.

He served his country during World War II, from 1942-45, as a member of the U.S. Navy, where he became a First Class Petty Officer and an aviation metal smith.

Bob was a member of the church. He was also a member of the State of Ohio Retired Teachers Association. Bob loved to cook. He liked to hunt and fish with longtime friends and also enjoyed gardening, woodworking and bird watching. Bob was a lifelong learner and teacher, and he especially loved spending time with family he was so proud of.

Bob’s wife, the former Frances F. Squires, whom he married Jan. 30, 1943, died Dec. 8, 1973. His second wife, the former Florence Rochow, whom he married March 22, 1975, died Oct. 14, 2009.

Bob is survived by his daughters, Sharon A. (George) Remias of Austintown, Ohio, and Janet S. (Dana) Slick of Niles; his brothers and sister, Irving of Morgantown, Elizabeth Waddell of Bridgeport, Dr. Ernest of Charlotte, N.C., and Daniel of Fairmont; his grandchildren, Tammi (Tim) Hartshorn and their children, Lindsey and Nicholas, George R. (Andrea) Remias and their children, Eleanor and Julia, Dr. Eric (Dr. Angela) Slick and their children, Ethan, Brandon, Cameron and Isabella, and Chad (Chantal) Slick.

Besides his wives, Bob was preceded in death by his sister, Juanita Riley.

Friends may call from 9:30-11 a.m. Friday at the church prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the American Heart Association, 840 Southwestern Run, Poland, OH 44514; or to the American Cancer Society, 525 N. Broad St., Canfield, OH 44406.
