Janice Lake

Janice “Nana” Louise Lake, 83, of Bunner Ridge Community, Fairmont, passed away Monday (March 25, 2013) at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, surrounded as she was in life by her loving family and pastor.

She was born in Marion County on May 9, 1929, a daughter of the late Charles K. and Cassie (Vangilder) Snyder.

Janice was a graduate of East Fairmont High School and later was employed at the Westinghouse Lamp Plant as she worked her way through college/

After graduation. she began her work with the Marion County Board of Education as an educator where her inspiring character built the foundation for many of her young students’ lives. Her employment covered everything from a teacher to a principal in a multitude of schools, including Catawba, Worthington, Central, Watson Elementary, Forksburg, White, State Street, Monongah and Mt. Clair.

She was one of the original founders of the Sagebrush Roundup and was active in the Mt. Sharon Free Methodist Church as well as the Fairmont Free Methodist Church. Janice was a role model and a pillar to her family and community.

She enjoyed spending time with her family, singing in the choir, gardening and sewing, and was always willing to lend a helping hand or a warm smile. Janice was strong in her faith and an inspiration in character. She faced every day with open arms and God in her heart.

She is survived by her husband, Lawrence Rex Lake of Bunner Ridge; one son, Kevin Lake and his wife Mary Ellen of Bunner Ridge; one daughter, Terry Lake Thomas and her husband Gary of Haddonfield, N.J.; 18 grandchildren, J. Travis and Ashley Swann, Blaine and Randa Cook, Allyson Cubitt and Mark DiSipio, Christina Moore, Drew and Brittany Myers, Matt and Melissa Mike, Michelle Moore, Courtney Tonkovich, Joseph Lake, Matthew and Rebecca Middlemas, Jonathan Middlemas and Hope Middlemas; and eight great-grandchildren, Bella Talerico, Haleigh Swann, Isaac Cook, Brenner Moore, Mason Myers, Brylee Myers, Maddox Mike and Logan Lake.

Also surviving is a sister, Mary Neel and her husband Lawrence of Bunner Ridge, and a brother-in-law, Paul Hayhurst.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sons, Lester Kent “Kenny” Lake and Chris Alan Lake; one sister, Edith M. Hayhurst; and a brother, Jacob K. Snyder

Family and friends may call at Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont, today from 4-8 p.m. and Friday from 10 a.m. to noon. The funeral service will be held at the funeral home Friday at noon with Pastor Carl Radcliff officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Fairmont.
