Mary Cornell

Mary Kathleen (Walls) Bingamon Cornell, 93, of Kingmont Community, Fairmont, passed away Tuesday (Sept. 3, 2013) at her home surrounded by her loving family, following a brief battle with cancer.

She was born in Fairmont on Oct. 27, 1919, a daughter of the late John Samuel and Blanche E. (Richards) Walls.

Mary was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. In her earlier years, she worked as a merchandiser for G.C. Murphy Co. and the Murphy Mart. She was a member of the Pleasant Valley Church of Christ, the Kingmont Community Auxiliary and the Kingmont Homemakers. She was also an avid bowler.

She is survived by two sons, Joseph “Bill” Bingamon and his wife Barbara of Conway, S.C., and John Robert Bingamon and his wife Jean of Florida; two daughters, Mary Ann Stemple and her husband Bud of Ravenswood, and Linda Kay Rohrig and her husband Adam of Bridgeport; seven grandchildren, Buddy Stemple, Dale Stemple, John Bingamon, Jay Gobel, Robin Wood, Heather Leansky and Kelly Armstrong; and several great-grandchildren.

Also surviving are two step-daughters, Linda Rice and her partner Gay Coates of Virginia, and LuAnn Cornell of Fairmont, two step-grandchildren, Jeff Rice and Michael Rice; as well as several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband of 32 years, John “Joe” Bingamon; her second husband of the last 16 years, Marion Percy Cornell in June of this year; a granddaughter, Gail Ann Stemple; three brothers, Earl Walls, Alfred Walls and Robert Walls; a sister, Etta Kennedy; and a step-daughter, Lois Jean Masters.

Family and friends may call at Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont ,on Friday from 1 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 1 p.m. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home on Saturday at 1 p.m. with Evangelist Jonathan Stevens officiating. Interment will follow at Grandview Memorial Gardens in Fairmont.

  • Nuke-arms grade stock has been cut by Iran

    Iran has converted three quarters of a nuclear stockpile that it could have turned quickly into weapons-grade uranium into less volatile forms and is well on the way toward transforming the rest, the U.N. atomic agency reported Thursday.
    The development — agreed to by Iran under a nuclear deal it struck late last year with six world powers — leaves Tehran with substantially less of the 20-percent enriched uranium that it would need for a nuclear warhead.
