June Norton

June Delores (Harbert) Norton, 96, of Fairmont, passed away Sunday (Sept. 8, 2013) at Wishing Well Assisted Living Community, where she had resided the last six years, following a long illness.

She was born in Wallace on June 29, 1917, a daughter of the late Charles V. and Ada (Dye) Harbert.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 50 years, Charles Reed Norton, in June 1993. The couple married on Jan. 25, 1943.

In her youth, Mrs. Norton was an active member of Wallace First Baptist Church where she was president of the youth group. She taught Sunday school and was the pianist. She worked with several local, county and state 4-H groups at Jackson’s Mill. She was selected as co-director of recreation at the state YTC camp at Jackson’s Mill. She also worked as a postal clerk in her earlier years.

June wrote a weekly column for The Exponent Telegram in Clarksburg. She was a former member of The Baptist Temple and the Shaffer Circle of the Women’s Ministry of the Church. She was a member of the Eastern Star Chapter No. 34 of Fairmont. She and her late husband shared an interest in growing flowers and crafts.

She is survived by two nieces, Mary Kay McMurray and Joyce Walker, both of Texas; her loving caregivers, Ernestine Nigh of Fairmont and June Eddy of Fairmont; as well as several other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her only child, Charles Jackson Norton; a sister, Mary Mae Hudkins; and a brother, Lt. Jackson Dye Harbert, a U.S. pilot killed during World War II.

Family and friends may call at Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home at 1:30 p.m. Thursday with Pastor Bob Barker and Mike Stivers officiating. Interment will follow at Wallace Lions Club Cemetery in Wallace with Pastor Keith Swiger officiating.

  • Nuke-arms grade stock has been cut by Iran

    Iran has converted three quarters of a nuclear stockpile that it could have turned quickly into weapons-grade uranium into less volatile forms and is well on the way toward transforming the rest, the U.N. atomic agency reported Thursday.
    The development — agreed to by Iran under a nuclear deal it struck late last year with six world powers — leaves Tehran with substantially less of the 20-percent enriched uranium that it would need for a nuclear warhead.
