Arthur Stuart

Arthur Edward Stuart, 82, passed away from this life Wednesday (Sept. 11, 2013) at Ruby Memorial Hospital.

He was born March 9, 1931, in Thomas, the son of Robert Edward and Elise Lena Stuart.

He married the love of his life, Evelyn Lavon Collins Stuart, on April 5, 1953.

Over 60 years together they raised five children, Kenneth Neil Stuart (Kathy) of Bennettsville, S.C., Jo Lynn Mitchell (Brad) of Franklin, Robert Freeman Stuart (Tina) of Fairmont, Susan Kay Martin (Brian) of Fairmont, and Arthur Edward Stuart II (Suzanne) of Williamsburg, Va.

Art was employed by and retired from A&P Foods, where he worked as a meat cutter and meat department manager in Morgantown, Fairmont and Bridgeport.

He was a deacon and active member of First Presbyterian Church of Fairmont. He and the late David Nuzum of Colfax worked together to establish a Boy Scout Troop in Colfax and served as an assistant leader for many years.

Art was an active and dedicated volunteer for the Fairmont/ Marion County Food Pantry for more than 20 years. He served the Food Pantry over the years as president of the board of directors and director of the pantry.

In addition to his wife and children, Art is survived by a brother, Ronald W. Stuart of Canaan; two sisters, Jean Stuart Sagace of Thomas and Louise Stuart Hitch of Big Springs, Texas; and one sister-in-law, Julia Stuart of Willoughby, Ohio.

He also was survived by 16 grandchildren, Whitney Stuart, Lauren Stuart Hodgson (Chris), Ross Stuart, Sarah, Alisha, Kristen and Rachel Mitchell, Lindsay Stuart Wiles (Stephen), Landon Stuart (Cassidy), Laryn (Roonie) Stuart, Logan, Tyler (Samantha), and Jordan Martin, Adam and Andrew Stuart and Melissa Stuart Hockaday (Justin); surviving great-grandchildren are McKenna Rae Wiles, Mason Montgomery Stuart and Jaxon Edward Hockaday.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Stuart Bryan, and a brother, Robert Stuart.

Family will receive friends at the Ford Funeral Home, Ford Chapel, 201 Columbia St., Fairmont, from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. today. The visitation will continue from 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday in the First United Presbyterian Church, 301 Jackson St., Fairmont.

A celebration of life memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the church with the Rev. Elise Neal officiating. A reception will be held in the church’s Fellowship Hall following the service. A private committal will take place at a later date.
