Katie Clagett

Catherine “Katie” Clagett, 82, of Fairmont, passed away at her residence Sunday (Feb. 2, 2014).

She was born in Anmoore on Jan. 31, 1932, to the late Luis and Julia Suarez Garcia.

Katie graduated from Bridgeport High School, where she met her husband, William “Bill” Clagett. They were married on June 30, 1951. After the birth of her fourth and last child, she enrolled at Fairmont State College, where she was awarded her degree in 1973. She then completed two master’s degrees from West Virginia University.

Katie was a Marion County teacher in the field of vocational home economics and Spanish. She ended her career as a Spanish teacher at North Marion High School. Katie enjoyed her teaching career, involvement in various extracurricular activities and travel opportunities related to her career. She was always thrilled to be recognized and greeted by “her students” she encountered throughout the community years after their high school graduation. Katie savored many fond memories of the faculty, staff and administration that were part of her professional life.

Katie’s life was full of wonderful stories that could be retold for decades and across generations thanks to her loving children. She is survived by her four children, Michael Clagett (wife Lisa) of Fairmont, Jeff Clagett of Fairmont, Becky Waldeck (husband Marc) of Finksburg, Md., and Steven Clagett (wife Mary) of Alexandria, Va. She is also survived by her “baby” brother, Louis Garcia and his wife Laurie of Arlington, Va. Katie was a proud loving “Yaya”/”Nana” to five grandchildren, Brice and Bronwyn Clagett of Fairmont; Katie Jane Clagett of Alexandria, Va.; Christopher Waldeck of Denver, Colo., and Michael Deasy (wife Sarah) of McDonald, Pa. Katie was a very special aunt for Julia (Gigi) Todd of Clarksburg and Gia Deasy of Fairmont.

In addition to her parents, Katie was preceded in death by her husband, William “Bill” Clagett, in 2005; as well as one sister, Julia Serafini, and one brother, Felix Garcia.

Katie was a member of Life Long Learners, the retired Marion County School employees group, and the “Red Hats.” She was a talented seamstress, avid reader and book club member.

The Clagett family would like to thank her caregivers and Hospice for their care. Her family would also like to acknowledge all friends and neighbors whose prayers, visits, emotional support and love filled Katie’s life and made the end of her life journey peaceful.

Katie has chosen cremation as her final disposition. Since her family was with her during her final days and considering the weather, there will be no visitation or service. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Katie’s honor to the charity of your choice.

Domico Funeral Home in Fairmont is in charge of her arrangements. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.domicofh.com.

  • Nuke-arms grade stock has been cut by Iran

Iran has converted three quarters of a nuclear stockpile that it could have turned quickly into weapons-grade uranium into less volatile forms and is well on the way toward transforming the rest, the U.N. atomic agency reported Thursday.
The development — agreed to by Iran under a nuclear deal it struck late last year with six world powers — leaves Tehran with substantially less of the 20-percent enriched uranium that it would need for a nuclear warhead.
