Thomas J. Martin, 87, of No. 9 Community, Farmington, died Tuesday (March 25, 2014) at the Woodland Assisted Living in Hutchinson, following an extended illness.
He was born Dec. 13, 1926, at James Fork, a son of the late Cecil Wamsley and Gladys Louise Haught.
Tom was a mechanic for Consolidation Coal Co.’s No. 9 mine and later for No. 95 Robinson Run, having retired with 42 years in the mining industry. He was a member of the UMWA Local 1501 and enjoyed trout fishing, fly-tying and camping.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Martha Jane Huff Martin, whom he married July 8, 1945; two sons and daughters-in-law, Thomas Wayne and Stanis Martin of Rivesville, and Timothy Lane and Lisa Martin of Cullhowee, N.C.; and eight grandchildren, Heather Elane Shoulders, Erin Faye Wood, Lane Alexander Martin, Alexis Faye Shoulders, Steven Thomas Shoulders, Austin Hunter Wood and Hunter Wilson Wood.
In addition to his birth parents, he was preceded in death by his adoptive parents, William Ogden and Cordelia Viney Fletcher Martin; and two half-brothers, James Orville Martin and Kermit Howard Wamsley.
Friends may call at Hutson Funeral Home in Farmington from 2-8 p.m. Friday and from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Interment will be in the IOOF Cemetery at Farmington.
