Holland “Leo” Delaney

Holland “Leo” Delaney, 84, of Metz, passed away Thursday (March 27, 2014) at Fairmont General Hospital.

He was born Jan. 29, 1930, in Metz, a son of the late Ocal Delaney and Georgia Ornduff Delaney.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Elva Crooks Delaney; three brothers, Charles Delaney of Brackettville,Texas, Jack Delaney and his wife Patty of Burton, and Kenneth Delaney and wife Linda of Denver, Colo.; one sister, Rosalie Straight of Mannington; several nieces and nephews also survive.

In addition to his parents, Leo was preceded in death by two brothers, Delbert Delaney and Arthur Delaney.

Leo was a United States Air Force veteran, having retired as master sergeant. He flew as a tail-gunner in many combat missions, 60 from Okinawa to Korea in a B29 and 116 from Guam, Okinawa and Thailand to Vietnam in a B52 bomber, for total of 176 missions. He flew top secret reconnaissance missions, 50 from Japan to “?” in a RB50. He had over 6,000 hours of flying time. He also taught for five years in Denver, Colo., “Fifty caliber machine guns.”

Leo was a deacon and trustee and welcome greeter at Lleweylen Baptist, Newfield Baptist and Calvary Baptist Church. He loved fishing and hunting. He was also a commercial pilot and had his regular pilot’s license. He camped and traveled in a motor home in all 50 states. He was employed with the U.S. Postal Service as a mail carrier.

Family and Friends may call at Masters Funeral Home, 209 Main St., Mannington, on Sunday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Funeral services will take place on Monday at 10:30 a.m. in the funeral home with Pastor Clifton Light officiating. Full military rites will be accorded by the United States Air Force and the Marion County Honor Guard. Burial will follow at West Virginia National Cemetery in Grafton.
