Claud “Buck” Benson Jr.

Claud H. “Buck” Benson Jr., 70, of McCurdysville, passed from this life in his home Sunday (March 24, 2013).

He was born in Marion County, on April 11, 1942, a son of the late Claud H. and Eva Blanch Phillips Benson.

Buck worked for the Marion County Board of Education as a school bus driver for more than 30 years. He most recently worked with the Marion County Sheriff Department as a transporter to Doddridge County until his health stopped him.

He was Methodist by faith. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, traveling (especially on his motorcycle) and watching the local deer cross through his property. He was an easygoing fellow that didn’t have an enemy in the world.

Mr. Benson is survived by two daughters, Elizabeth A. “Beth” Starcher of McCurdysville and Diana L. Benson of Fairmont, both of whom were his primary care givers for the last few months; two sons and daughters-in-law, Claud H. “Bub” Benson III and Joni of McCurdysville, and Scottie R. and Tammy Benson of Harrisonburg, Va.; his brother and sister-in-law, Samuel and Nancy C. Benson of McCurdysville; one sister, Barbara Benson of Wheeling; 10 grandchildren, Brandon and Megan Starcher and her fiancé Nathan Harris, Erica Benson Moore and her husband Drew, Brooklyn Benson, Kayla Benson Sallis, Scottie Benson Jr., Bladen Benson, Ashley Foster and her husband Kyle, and Tressa and Justin Wells; three great-grandchildren, Hayden Sallis, Charish McDourman and Rylie Foster; also several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 46 years, Nancy Lee Benson, on May 4, 2010, and two sisters and brothers-in-law, JoAnn and Howard Layman, and Floradell “Flo” and Carl Harding.

Like his wife, Buck chose cremation as his method of disposition. His family will celebrate his life with a covered-dish dinner at his home at a later date, that will be announced. A private committal service will be held at the McCurdysville cemetery.

Condolences may be sent to the family at www.freyhomeforfunerals.com or fhff320@aol .com.

  • Nuke-arms grade stock has been cut by Iran

Iran has converted three quarters of a nuclear stockpile that it could have turned quickly into weapons-grade uranium into less volatile forms and is well on the way toward transforming the rest, the U.N. atomic agency reported Thursday.
The development — agreed to by Iran under a nuclear deal it struck late last year with six world powers — leaves Tehran with substantially less of the 20-percent enriched uranium that it would need for a nuclear warhead.
