John William “Bill” Currey, 85, of Shinnston, passed away Sunday (March 31, 2013) at his residence following a brief illness.
He was born March 13, 1928, at Morgantown, a son of the late William John Currey and Cocoa Mae Vannoy Currey.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Lee Zirkle Currey, who passed away April 30, 2011.
Bill is survived by his children, Marcia Jones and her husband Wayne of Shinnston, Linda Osbourn and her husband Rodney of Shinnston, John Currey II and his wife Cindy of Shinnston, and Melissa Rice of Bridgeport.
Also surviving are his grandchildren, Steven Jones and his wife Kristi, Christopher Jones and his fiancée Chrissy Zeltner, Lisa Rawlings and her husband Michael, Wesley Osbourn and his fiancée Kaitlin Nuzum, Casey Currey, Nicholas Currey, Alex Rice and Paige Rice; and two great-grandchildren, Brianna Rawlings and Kyle Jones.
In addition to his parents and his wife, Bill was preceded in death by his sisters, Mary Rita Vincent, Alice Ruth Sweet and Martha Robustelli; and by his two brothers, George and Robert L. Currey.
Bill was a graduate of the Mannington High School Class of 1946. He formerly worked for Buffalo Tank, in New Jersey and a coal mine at Haywood. He started selling insurance with Farm Bureau and later Nationwide Insurance, retiring Feb. 28, 1994, with 45 years’ service to the community. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Shinnston, and the St. John’s Lodge No. 24, A.F. & A.M. in Shinnston. He formerly served in Shinnston City Council and enjoyed golf, hunting and fishing, and camping with his wife and family.
Friends will be received at Harmer Funeral Home, Shinnston, from 2-8 p.m. Wednesday. A funeral service will be held at the funeral home at 11 a.m. Thursday with Pastor Jeff Osbourn and the Rev. Aulbert Roberts officiating. Interment will follow at Shinnston Masonic Cemetery.
