Lyal Rex Tate, 84, of Fairmont, passed away peacefully at his residence Sunday (Sept. 15, 2013).
He was born Jan. 8, 1929, in Bristol, the son of the late Wilson M. and Ellen Spindle Tate. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Ruth Ellen Harding Tate.
Mr. Tate worked as the superintendent of the Machine Shop for the F.M.C. Corp. with 30 years of service. A 1948 graduate of East Fairmont High School, Lyal loved gardening and worked his garden up to the age of 82. He was a member of the Fairmont Travel Club. Lyal leaves behind many memories of outdoor marshmallow and wiener roasts, holiday spaghetti dinners for his family to cherish, and many front porch visits with his beloved neighbors.
Mr. Tate is survived by five sons, Richard Tate and his wife Marcy of Florence, Ark., Wayne Gregory of Sandusky, Ohio, Gerald Gregory and his wife Phyllis of Martinsburg, Steve Gregory and his wife Regina of West End, N.C., and Randy Gregory and his wife Janet of St. Clairsville, Ohio; four daughters, Terry Bombard of White Hall, Vickie Massullo and her husband Ricky of Harrisburg, Pa., Patty Burmeister and her husband Curt of Knotts Island, N.C., and Jacki Gregory of Martinsburg; two sisters, Joann Kyre and her husband Galen of Pickerington, Ohio, and Betty Lou Lynch and her husband John of Fairmont; 20 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Sam Bombard Jr.
The family will receive friends at Ford Funeral Home, Ford Chapel, 201 Columbia St., Fairmont, from 6-9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home at 1 p.m. Wednesday with Reverend Stanley Merrifield officiating. The committal service will follow in Grandview Memorial Gardens.
