Harry Golden

A former co-owner and operating partner of Golden Brothers Department Store has returned to Madison Street one last time.

Harry T. Golden, 88, of Fairmont, passed suddenly from this life Sunday (Oct. 27, 2013) at Fairmont General Hospital.

He was born in Altoona, Pa., on April 21, 1925, the only child of the late Israel and Bess Levine Golden.

He graduated from Fairmont Senior High School, Class of 1943. Upon graduation he served his country during World War II as an electrician’s mate in the U.S. Navy aboard the battleship USS Wyoming from 1943 until his discharge in 1946. He attended WVU and then the University of Michigan, where he met and became engaged to a lovely young lady named Sarah Gail Lewis, whom he married in 1948. While at college he became a member of the Phi Sigma Delta Fraternity. Upon his return to Fairmont in ’48 he began his career in the family business, Golden Brothers Department Store, which he and his cousin Jack became co-owners and operating partners of until its closing in 1979.

He was a member of the Temple Beth-El of Fairmont Jewish Community Center. He served as the treasurer of the United Jewish Appeal. He was a 59-year member of the American Legion Post 17, was a member of Bel Meadows Country Club, Fox Hill Country Club and was a charter member of Green Hills Country Club. He was a former member of BPO Elks Lodge 294. He was an avid golfer and enjoyed watching “NCIS,” the Steelers, the Mountaineers and the Pirates.

Mr. Golden is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Norman Collier of San Jose, Calif.; his son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Dianna Golden of Beckley; four grandchildren, Craig Golden, Christine Houchins, Benjamin Collier and Rachael Collier; three great-grandchildren, Delaney Dempsey, Bryan Butler and Parker Golden; his cousin, Jack Golden; and close friends, Bill Gross, Juanita and Charlie Merico.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 28 years, Sara Gail, in 1976; and his daughter, Suzanne Golden Smith.

Friends may call at Frey Home For Funerals (Historic Chapel), 320 Madison St., Fairmont, from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday and from 9-10 a.m. Thursday. Services will be held in the funeral home at 10 a.m. Thursday with Rabbi Joe Hample officiating. Following the funeral the U.S. Navy and the Marion County Honor Guard will present military honors. Interment will follow at the Hebrew cemetery in Hopwood, Pa.
