Susan Hutchinson

Susan Elizabeth Hutchinson, formerly of Fairmont, died Wednesday (Oct. 30, 2013) in Charlottesville, Va.

She was born in Fairmont, on Dec. 8, 1919, the daughter of the late Ethel Fortney Haymond and Joseph Jackson Haymond.

A dedicated and loyal wife, mother, grandmother and friend, Susan was preceded in death by her loving husband of 63 years, John W. “Jack” Hutchinson, in 2005. Also preceding her in death were her sisters, Louise, Jean and JoAnne, and brother, Royce.

Mrs. Hutchinson was descended from one of Fairmont's pioneer families and was a great-great-granddaughter of Major William Haymond, who was once commander of Pricketts Fort.

She attended Fairmont schools and was a graduate of Fairmont Senior High School and attended West Virginia Business College.

She had been employed by the U.S. Army Corps during WW II and Monongahela Power Co. of Fairmont. She later worked for Hartley's Department Store of Fairmont and became a staff writer for the Times West Virginian newspaper. After her children were in college, she became a public relations assistant for Fairmont State College.

She was a very active member of Christ Episcopal Church, the Junior League of Fairmont, Fairmont Field Club, Daughters of the American Revolution, Colonial Dames, and various garden clubs and other civic organizations.

She mostly enjoyed annual beach vacations with her family and friends, her screened porch, reading books, playing bridge and working in her garden. She was a loyal West Virginia University sports fan, attending football games with Jack for many years. She was well versed in the use of her computer, initially to play games and later to work on her extensive family genealogy research, as well as for email with family and friends all over the country.

Surviving are her daughter, JoAnne Peach of Charlottesville, Va.; son and daughter-in-law, John W. Jr. and Kerry of Johnson City, Tenn.; grandchildren, Beth Ginter, Alan Hutchinson and Krista Wanderman; great-grandchildren, Abby and Will Ginter, John Claire, Lily Hutchinson, and Darrah and Hannah Wanderman. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and close friends, Jane Tyler and Norma Hall of Fairmont.

Loved dearly by her family and friends, Susan will be greatly missed.

Susan's family would like to offer thanks to the staff of the Christopher Center at Our Lady of Peace for their loving care during the past few years.

The family has entrusted Ford Funeral Home, R.C. Jones Chapel, 1410 Country Club Road, Fairmont, with arrangements, which at this time are incomplete. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.fordfuneralhomescom.

The family requests memorials be made to the Christ Episcopal Church, 405 Ninth St., Fairmont, WV 265545 or to Hospice of the Piedmont, 675 Peter Jefferson Parkway, Suite 300, Charlottesville, VA 22911.
