Tommie Evans

Tommie Lynn (McIntire) Evans, 68, of Fairmont, passed away Thursday (Oct. 31, 2013) at The Heritage Nursing Home in Bridgeport.

She was born in Fairmont, on April 1, 1945, a daughter of the late Thomas Owens McIntire and Freeda Kathleen (Yeater) McIntire.

Tommie proudly served her country with the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War, working as a flight nurse and clinical nurse. After her military service, she continued her nursing career at Fairmont General Hospital and Ruby Memorial Hospital. She also worked as a registered nurse at hospitals in Potomac and Fairfax, Va., and as a visiting nurse in O’Fallon, Ill.

She was a graduate of East Fairmont High School and St. Mary’s Nursing School in Clarksburg, and she attended St. Louis University. She was Catholic by faith, attending Immaculate Conception Church in Fairmont. She was a member of the Red Hat Society of Virginia and the VFW of Virginia. She had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed sewing, crafts, remodeling and ballroom dancing.

She is survived by one son, Charles Marshall Evans Jr. and his wife Sarah of Fairmont; one daughter, Alycia M. Taha and her husband Ahmed of Florida; and two grandchildren, Samuel Gonzales and Brian Gonzales.

Also surviving is her sister, Billie Lemasters; her husband, Paul of Fairmont; her good friend and companion, Richard “Dick” Bulova of Tampa, Fla.; and her aunts, Viola McIntyre and Norma McIntire, both of Fairmont.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandparents, William E. and Hazel McIntire, and Burley Ray and Gertha M. Yeater; a nephew, Thomas T. Hilerman; and an uncle, William “Bill” McIntire.

Family and friends may call at Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont, on Monday from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. A vigil service will be held in the funeral home on Monday at 8:30 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, 329 Maryland Ave. in Fairmont, with Rev. Walter Jagela as the Celebrant. Interment services will follow at the West Virginia National Cemetery in Pruntytown, where full military honors will be conducted by the Marion County Veterans Council Honor Guard.

  • Nuke-arms grade stock has been cut by Iran

    Iran has converted three quarters of a nuclear stockpile that it could have turned quickly into weapons-grade uranium into less volatile forms and is well on the way toward transforming the rest, the U.N. atomic agency reported Thursday.
    The development — agreed to by Iran under a nuclear deal it struck late last year with six world powers — leaves Tehran with substantially less of the 20-percent enriched uranium that it would need for a nuclear warhead.
