Helen Hoffman

Helen B. Hoffman, 100, died peacefully at her home surrounded by her loving family and her devoted caregivers.

She was just five days shy of her 101st birthday, which she always looked forward to celebrating with family.

Helen was born on Dec. 22, 1912, in Marion County, West Virginia. Her parents were the late William and Wilma Kendall.

She married William B. Hoffman on March 14, 1936. They were married for 40 years until Bill’s passing. She worked at the First Exchange Bank in Mannington, and was a bookkeeper working out of her home.

She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Mannington. She was an avid bridge player, hosting many bridge parties in her home. After Bill’s passing, she learned to drive at the age of 65. She traveled to many places with the Marion County Senior Citizens.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother.

Helen is survived by one daughter, Jeanne Potoczny of Fairmont; and a daughter-in-law, Bernadine Hoffman of Martins Ferry, Ohio. She has six grandchildren, Michael and Melodie Potoczny of Worthington, Jon and Tina Potoczny of Farmington, Shelley and Gregg Lorenze of Morgantown, Ken and Sharon Hoffman of Trabuco Canyon, Calif., Kym and Roger Cottrell of Morgantown, and Jessica and Jake Elsass of Huntsville, Ala.; 19 great-grandchildren, and several great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two nieces and a nephew. She is survived by four very special caregivers, Ruth, Joyce, Loretta and Betty.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William B. Hoffman, in 1976; a son, William K. Hoffman; a daughter, Sally Elaine Robinson; a sister, Katie Cross; and a sister who died in infancy.

Helen lived a very full life. She was very kind and loving. Her family was so very fortunate to be able to have her live at home. This would not have been possible without her daughter-in-law, Bernie, who managed her care for many years. She was always trying to find a way to make life “better and easier” for Helen. Also, her caregivers Ruth, Joyce, Loretta and Betty did everything they could to make Helen’s life as comfortable as possible. Without them, the goal of her being able to stay at home wouldn’t have been possible. The family is very grateful for all of them.

Friends may call at the Hutson Funeral Home, 500 E. Main St., Mannington, on Sunday from noon until 2 p.m. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home at 2 p.m. Interment will be in the Mannington Memorial Park Cemetery.

  • Nuke-arms grade stock has been cut by Iran

Iran has converted three quarters of a nuclear stockpile that it could have turned quickly into weapons-grade uranium into less volatile forms and is well on the way toward transforming the rest, the U.N. atomic agency reported Thursday.
The development — agreed to by Iran under a nuclear deal it struck late last year with six world powers — leaves Tehran with substantially less of the 20-percent enriched uranium that it would need for a nuclear warhead.
