Raymond Basnett

Raymond K. Basnett, 84, formerly of Hutchinson, died Saturday (Dec. 20, 2013), at the Hopemont Hospital in Terra Alta following an extended illness.

He was born May 1, 1929, at Salt Lick, near Mannington, a son of the late William Taylor Basnett and Dessie Mae Hamilton Basnett.

Raymond was employed by the Fischer Foundry in Hutchinson for many years. He was an avid sports fan and coached Little League baseball in Hutchinson. While coaching, his teams won many championships, of which Raymond was extremely proud. He loved the Lord, was a Christian by faith, and enjoyed reading his Bible.

Survivors include a daughter, Rhonda Greek and husband Bradley, of Georgia; a grandson, Nicholas Greek; and several nieces and nephews.

He was the last surviving member of his immediate family, having also been preceded in death by four sisters and brothers-in-law, Margaret L. and Richard Kniceley, Naomi B. and Mitchell Roshinski, Betty L. and Bill Morris, and Eleanor J. and Bill Shaver; three brothers, Edward C. Basnett and wife Ruby, Richard T. “Buddy” Basnett and Alvin Marshall Basnett, who died in infancy.

Friends may call at the Hutson Funeral Home in Farmington today from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., where funeral services will be held on Monday at 9 a.m. with Pastor Charles Fancher officiating. Interment will be in the Shinnston Masonic Cemetery.

  • Nuke-arms grade stock has been cut by Iran

    Iran has converted three quarters of a nuclear stockpile that it could have turned quickly into weapons-grade uranium into less volatile forms and is well on the way toward transforming the rest, the U.N. atomic agency reported Thursday.
    The development — agreed to by Iran under a nuclear deal it struck late last year with six world powers — leaves Tehran with substantially less of the 20-percent enriched uranium that it would need for a nuclear warhead.
