Doris Hawkins

Doris Jean Barnes Hawkins, 86, a resident of Meadowview Manor Health Care Center, formerly of Pleasant Valley, passed away Sunday (April 14, 2013) at the nursing facility in Bridgeport.

She was born March 17, 1927, a daughter of the late Frank R. and Martha Bainbridge Barnes.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William J. Hawkins, on March 16, 2000.

Mrs. Hawkins was a lifetime member of Valley Chapel United Methodist Church in Pleasant Valley. She was a graduate of East Fairmont High School.

Doris served as manager and part owner of Reliable Express Trucking Co. with her husband, Bill, for 30 years in Marion County. She had previously worked at Craig Motors and G.C. Murphy’s as the bookkeeper.

Doris enjoyed bowling, where she had been active in the Mid City Housewife League. She loved baking, giving pies and cookies to family and friends, and spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include sons, Bill and his wife Patty Hawkins of Fairmont, Gary and his wife Elaine Hawkins of Pleasant Valley, and Ed and his wife Karlotta Hawkins of Benton’s Ferry; sister, Betty Middlemas of Pleasant Valley; grandchildren, B.J. Hawkins of Pleasant Valley, Eli and his wife Sarah Hawkins of Barrackville, Cameron and his wife Jody Hawkins of Fayetteville, N.C., Lucas and his wife Meagon Hawkins of Fairmont, and Paige and her husband John Funkhouser of Fairmont; four great-grandchildren, Aiden, Lilly, Brook and Will Hawkins; and several nieces and nephews, including Hank and his wife Kim Middlemas of Fairmont.

She was preceded in death by brother, James “Bud” Barnes; and a sister, Margaret Ann Barnes.

Memorial donations may be made to Valley Chapel United Methodist Church, 1511 Pleasant Valley Road, Fairmont, WV 26554.

The family will accept friends at Ford Funeral Home, Ford Chapel, 201 Columbia St., Fairmont, from 3-8 p.m. today and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home at 2 p.m. Wednesday with the Rev. Andrew Tennant and Pastor Jim Norton officiating. Interment will follow at Linn Cemetery in Benton’s Ferry.

  • Nuke-arms grade stock has been cut by Iran

    Iran has converted three quarters of a nuclear stockpile that it could have turned quickly into weapons-grade uranium into less volatile forms and is well on the way toward transforming the rest, the U.N. atomic agency reported Thursday.
    The development — agreed to by Iran under a nuclear deal it struck late last year with six world powers — leaves Tehran with substantially less of the 20-percent enriched uranium that it would need for a nuclear warhead.
