The Rev. Daniel Morris Sr.

The Rev. Daniel Smith Morris Sr., 83, of Harrisonburg, passed away at his home Sunday (July 14, 2013) after a short battle with cancer.

He was born March 5, 1930, in Monongah, and was the son of the late Earle Ross and Katherine Grace Morris.

He trained to serve in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. He graduated from Monongah High School in 1947 and attended Fairmont State College. He transferred to Bob Jones University, where he graduated in 1959. He served as pastor to several small churches before he founded and pastored Emmanuel Baptist Church, 2774 Northwestern Pike, Winchester, Va. After his retirement, he was a member of Smith Creek Baptist Church, New Market, Va. He served God and loved people with his whole heart.

The Rev. Morris was a genuine and faithful minister, husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Janet Aldine “Dean” Vincent Morris; his children, Danette Shelley, Joy Walker, Daniel Morris Jr. and Charity Morris; his grandchildren, Isaac Shelley and wife Jody, Jacob Shelley and wife Amy, Joel Shelley, Cherith Shelley, Anne Craig, Eliza Craig and Maggie Osborne; and his great-grandchildren, Parker Shelley, Avery Haislit and Addison Shelley.

One daughter, Jan Morris, and both of his sisters, Elizabeth Fowler and Doris Jean Ullman, preceded him in death.

The family will receive friends from 6:30-8 p.m. today at Grandle Funeral Home, located at 148 E. Lee St., Broadway, Va. The Rev. Glenn Welsh will conduct the funeral service at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Grandle Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Woodlawn Cemetery in Fairmont.

Pallbearers will be his son and grandchildren.

  • Nuke-arms grade stock has been cut by Iran

    Iran has converted three quarters of a nuclear stockpile that it could have turned quickly into weapons-grade uranium into less volatile forms and is well on the way toward transforming the rest, the U.N. atomic agency reported Thursday.
    The development — agreed to by Iran under a nuclear deal it struck late last year with six world powers — leaves Tehran with substantially less of the 20-percent enriched uranium that it would need for a nuclear warhead.
