Sandra Gaston

Sandra Lee Gaston, 76, of Lost Creek passed away at 1:27 pm on Thursday (July 18, 2013) in the United Hospital Center in Bridgeport after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was born in Mt. Clare on April 4, 1937, a daughter of the late Clyde Lyle and Gertrude Nellie Shears Mitchell. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Marsha Simmons.

She is survived by two daughters: Barbara Gaston of Lost Creek, and Susan Gaston of Bridgeport; four sons: Robert Gaston and wife Julia of Bridgeport, David Gaston Jr. of Columbus, Ohio, Michael Gaston and wife Jeannie of Lost Creek and Timothy Gaston of Whitehall, Ohio; one sister, Judith Trevison and husband Alfred of Lost Creek; 13 grandchildren: David, Timmy and Traci Gaston, Michael, Crystal and Amanda Gaston, Rachel and Brandi Messenger, Dawn Surock, Jamie and Angela Cantrell, and Adrienne and Bethany Gaston; 16 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and several cousins, including Jerry Nickerson and wife Carmella of California.

Sandra retired from the Harrison County Board of Education as a valued service personnel employee, with 22 years of service as a cook. She was an Angel of Service to her community, who always put the needs of others ahead of her own. She was a member and trustee of the Lost Creek United Methodist Church, a member of the United Methodist Women, a board member of the Southern Area Library, a member of the Lost Creek Christmas Light Committee, a member of the Red Hat Society, founder and past president of the Lost Creek Country Fall Festival, a member of the Lost Creek Senior Citizens, a member of the Lost Creek Alumni Committee, a former Lost Creek Council Member, a member of the Lost Creek Women’s Fireman’s Auxiliary, a 1955 graduate of Lost Creek High School, and an active volunteer for the church food pantry and Lost Creek Helping Hands. She loved to read and was known by all her friends and family as an excellent cook. She often organized benefit dinners and delivered meals to friends who were “under the weather.”

Her family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation and gratitude for the loving care that their mom received from Dr. Bragger and the nurses and staff of the Chemo Dept. of the Cancer Center of UHC and the 6 South Wing of UHC.

Sandra’s request for cremation has been honored and her family invites you to attend a Celebration of Life Service at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 4, at the Lost Creek United Methodist Church with the Rev. Karen Brown officiating. Interment will follow in the Lost Creek Seventh Day Baptist Cemetery.
