William “Bill” “Poodle” Lawrence Townsend, formerly of Fairmont, died Thursday (Dec. 6, 2012) in Buffalo, N.Y., after a brief illness.
He was born in Baxter on Feb. 5, 1946, a son of Dona (Riffle) Townsend of Bellview and the late Creed W. Townsend.
He is survived by his third wife, Katherine, whom he married in 2002.
Bill held several jobs such as bus driver for Marion County, Westinghouse, self-employed and as a truck driver.
He proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War.
In addition to his third wife, he is survived by his daughter, Janet and husband Mike Rollings of Olney, Texas; and three sons, Robert Howard and fiancee Kathy (Cottrell) Townsend of Fairmont, TSgt. William Lawrence and wife Krystal Townsend Jr. of Bossier City, La., and Zachery Len Townsend of Fairmont.
He is also survived by two stepdaughters and one stepson.
He is also survived by nine grandchildren, Cody and Keeley Rollings of Olney, Texas, Reva Chickerell, Stan Townsend, Diann Trusler and Zachery Joseph Ray Townsend, all of Fairmont, and Gabe, Gavin and Gabriella Townsend of Bossier City, La.
He is also survived by one great-grandson, Jenson William Cole Chickerell of Fairmont.
Also surviving are two sisters and two brothers, Freda Kelley of Fairmont, Veta and husband Ed Cottrell of West Virginia, Richard and Joyce Townsend of Farmington, and Kenny and Sandy Townsend of Rivesville.
Also surviving are several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and -nephews and two great-great-nieces.
In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Delmas and Charles Townsend; and one sister, JoAnn Townsend. He was also preceded in death by one niece, Susan Townsend Kuhn.
A memorial will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hagen’s Christian Church with full military rites. Family and friends are invited to attend.
