The Rev. Michael O’Dell

The Rev. Michael “Mike” O’Dell of Dade City, Fla., died July 10, 2013. Although in ill health for several years, his death was unexpected.

Mike was the son of the late Walter and Madeline (Hamrick) O’Dell of Rivesville. He was born and raised in Rivesville and graduated from Rivesville High School, Class of 1956. He was a graduate of Glenville State College in 1968 and United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio, in 1971. Growing up, he attended and was a member of Evangelical United Brethren Church in Highlawns, Rivesville.

Mike entered the ministry in 1963, serving churches in Jackson and Gilmer counties. He was ordained in the United Church of Christ in 1971. He served at Trinity United Church of Christ as Pastor Emeritus in New Lebanon, Ohio, and Plattsburg, Ohio.

In between pastorial assignments, he taught learning-disabled students for seven years in Ohio. Mike retired from the active ministry in 2000, but was still ministering as of July 4 of this year.

He is survived by his wife, Juanita (Davis) O’Dell; sons, Walter Kent (Tracie) of Salem, Ore., and Michael Craig (Angie) of Springfield, Ohio; and five grandchildren, Brittany, Shaler, Conner, Cameron and Madalynn. Also surviving are several first cousins. On the maternal side are George W. Henderson of Aladdin, Wyo., William Yost of Cedar Creek, Texas, Shirley (Hamrick) Layman of Fairmont, Martha (Hamrick) Wilcox of Shepherdstown, Grace A. (Henderson) Rau of Ocean Pines, Md., and Sue (Wilfong) Starford of Deer Park, Mont. Two are deceased, Robert Yost and Harold V. Hamrick. On the paternal side are Clarice (Coffman) Musgrave of Clarksburg, Marjorie (Coffman) Brookover of Fairmont, Sallie (Coffman) Angle of Buckhannon, Mary Kay (O’Dell) Harrison of Charleston, and Suzanne (O’Dell) Floyd of Fairmont. One cousin, Monard Coffman, is deceased.

  • Nuke-arms grade stock has been cut by Iran

    Iran has converted three quarters of a nuclear stockpile that it could have turned quickly into weapons-grade uranium into less volatile forms and is well on the way toward transforming the rest, the U.N. atomic agency reported Thursday.
    The development — agreed to by Iran under a nuclear deal it struck late last year with six world powers — leaves Tehran with substantially less of the 20-percent enriched uranium that it would need for a nuclear warhead.
