Stanley Plachta

FAIRMONT — Stanley J. Plachta, 60, of New Martinsville, formerly of Farmington, died Tuesday (May 4, 2010) at his home.

He was born Nov. 24, 1949, in Fairmont.

He was a retired welder at Bayer Corp.; a U.S. Army veteran of Vietnam where he received an Oak Leaf Cluster and Purple Heart; and was a Catholic by faith.

Stanley was preceded in death by his parents, Stanley and Ann Bienkoski Plachta.

Survivors include his wife, Karen Bridgeman Plachta; two brothers, Ron (Linda) Plachta of Bolivar, Pa., and Joe (Suzanne) Plachta of Carmichaels, Pa.; three sisters, Kathy (Van) Pitman of Idamay, Mary Ann (Kerry) Duncan of Union City, Pa., and Julie Plachta of Farmington; and two stepchildren, Rachel (Brian) Morey and Aaron Rogozinski.

Family will receive friends from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Grisell Funeral Home & Crematory, 751 Third St., New Martinsville. Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Mount Carmel Cemetery, Fairmont, with Father Douglas B. Sutton as celebrant.

  • Nuke-arms grade stock has been cut by Iran

    Iran has converted three quarters of a nuclear stockpile that it could have turned quickly into weapons-grade uranium into less volatile forms and is well on the way toward transforming the rest, the U.N. atomic agency reported Thursday.
    The development — agreed to by Iran under a nuclear deal it struck late last year with six world powers — leaves Tehran with substantially less of the 20-percent enriched uranium that it would need for a nuclear warhead.
