Oran Grant Thompson, 79, of Fairmont (Colfax Community), passed quietly from this life in his home Tuesday (Jan. 14, 2014).
He was born in Fairmont, on Aug. 13, 1934, a son of the late Grant and Stachie Alkire Thompson.
He was a Christian and Baptist by faith. He worked as a miner for a total of 43 years, 31 years mining coal with a 12-year period he mined salt in Whiskey Island, Ohio. He was a member of the U.M.W.A. and District Local 31.
He truly loved his children and grandchildren and enjoyed taking them camping, hunting and fishing, especially at Spruce Knob. He also enjoyed listening to gospel and country music and watching westerns.
Mr. Thompson is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Hala Pierce Thompson; five children, Sharon Mahnen of Seville, Ohio, Howard Grant Thompson of Fairmont, Iva Postle and her husband Michael of Fairmont, Belinda Baylor of Morgantown, and Brandon Thompson of Fairmont; one brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Janice Thompson of Fairmont; one sister, Wanetta Yost of Fairmont; one sister-in-law, Virginia Thompson; nine grandchildren, Matt, Chris, Alex, Robert, BJ, Timmy, Shawn, Joey and Brittney; and eight great-grandchildren, Adrian, Clay, McKinzie, Summer Dawn, Maddi, Ellie, Cole and Kagen.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, George and Raymond D. Thompson; one sister and two brothers-in-law, Iva and Andy Boscka, and Charles “Buck” Yost; one grandson, Andrew Grant Thompson; and one great-granddaughter, Korin.
Friends may call at the Frey Home For Funerals (Addition Chapel A), 320 Madison St., Fairmont, from 1-8 p.m. today and Saturday from 10 a.m.-noon. Services will be held in the funeral home Saturday at noon with the Rev. Steve Morgan officiating. Interment will follow at the Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens at Jane Lew.
