Lydia Monell

Lydia Monell, 88, of Monongah, died Monday (Jan. 13, 2014), at Fazio’s Elder Care in Monongah after a long illness.

Lydia was born Feb. 1, 1925, in Monongah, a daugh­ter of the late James and Susan (Tartell) Monell.

Lydia graduated from Monongah High School in 1942. She attended Fairmont Business College and began her professional career working for Westinghouse Corp. Lydia then worked as both a secretary and office manager for Tarleton and Astro Buick until her retirement in 1992. A Catholic by faith, Lydia was also very active in church work at Holy Spirit Catholic Church and for many years provided financial services for St. Barbara’s Nursing Home in Monongah.

Lydia enjoyed spending time with her family, enjoyed reading, working around the house and in her flower garden and was certainly a very special aunt to her nephews and nieces and their children.

A beloved sister and aunt, survivors include her brother-in-law, John Koloskie Jr. of Monongah; a sister-in-law, Elaine Monell of Dayton, Ohio; nephews, Jerry Koloskie and his wife Annette of Las Vegas, Nev., Ray Monell and his wife Mindy of Beaver Creek, Ohio, and Mark Monell and his wife Sarah of Lexington, Ky.; nieces, including Cindy (Monell) Sommers and her husband Bob of Beaver Creek, Ohio, and Valerie (Monell) Zack and her husband Bob of Beaver Creek, Ohio; as well as several great-nephews and -nieces.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Raymond Monell of Dayton, Ohio, who died in 2012; and her sister, Julia (Monell) Koloskie, who passed away in October 2013.

Friends may call at Ross Funeral Home, 801 Fairmont Ave., Fairmont, from 5-8 p.m. Thursday. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11 a.m. Friday at Holy Spirit Church in Monongah with the Rev. Father Douglass Sutton as celebrant. Interment will be at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Monongah.

The family of Lydia would like to extend a special thank you to Cora Fazio and the entire staff at Fazio’s Elder Care for their exceptional care and concern for Lydia during the past few years and also a special thank you to a wonderful neighbor and friend, Barbara Sweede, for all her care and assistance.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to Fazio Elder Care LLC, 116 Stoney Lonesome Road, Fairmont, WV 26554.

  • Nuke-arms grade stock has been cut by Iran

    Iran has converted three quarters of a nuclear stockpile that it could have turned quickly into weapons-grade uranium into less volatile forms and is well on the way toward transforming the rest, the U.N. atomic agency reported Thursday.
    The development — agreed to by Iran under a nuclear deal it struck late last year with six world powers — leaves Tehran with substantially less of the 20-percent enriched uranium that it would need for a nuclear warhead.
