Nelson Starcher

Nelson Jay Starcher, 70, of Worthington, passed away Friday (July 19, 2013) at West Virginia University Hospital, Ruby Memorial, Morgantown.

He was born Sept. 16, 1942, a son of the late Damon “Bus” and Katherine Toots Starcher.

He was married to the love of his life, Karen Cool Starcher, on Oct. 29, 1965, who survives. He renewed his love to her Oct. 27, 1990.

He was a very active father and grandfather to three children and five grandchildren, David Starcher and Doug Starcher, both of Worthington, and Shara Schell and her husband Troy of Carolina, Haden Starcher, Jessica Starcher, Mathew Starcher, Brianna Ludwick and Jaylen Schell; two special mothers, Pam Goerge and Tresa Starcher; two brothers-in-law, Thomas Cool and his wife Sharyn of Niles, Ohio, and Douglas Cool of Parkersburg; sister-in-law, Ruth Starcher of Milford, Ga.; his special cousins, Menoka and Lloyd Parrish and the late Stewart Parrish; several nieces and nephews, who loved him dearly; and four lifelong friends, David Loretta, James Nottingham, Richard Davis and the late Gary “Gabby” Moyer.

He was also preceded in death by one brother, James Starcher; one sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Ward Byrd; and brother-in-law, William Cool.

Nelson was a 1960 graduate of Monongah High School. He coached Little League for numerous years, being the first coach to receive Little League Coach of the Year. He coached Fringe League All Stars for two years, taking them to the state championship game. One year he had his four eldest grandkids on one team and coached his youngest from the sidelines.

He worked as a coal miner, having retired with 30 years service in 1990. He was a proud member of the UMWA, Local 1501, where he held every office at least once; he was also active for numerous committees for UMWA and served as a lobbyist for the State Compact Committee.

He was appointed by Gov. Gaston Caperton to serve the West Virginia Coal Bed Methane Review Board, serving for 10 years. He was a member of the Worthington Volunteer Fire Department from 1960-76. He was a member of the Knights of Pythian and was a member of Jewel City Church, where he enjoyed singing in the choir.

The family would like to thank the Hospice staff and nurses of Ruby Memorial, Sandra Phipps and Jessica Murry.

Friends may call at Perine Funeral Home, U.S. 19 South, Shinnston, from 6-8 p.m. Monday and from 2-8 p.m. Tuesday. Funeral services will be held at Jewel City Church at noon Wednesday with Pastor Robert Shingleton officiating. Nelson will lie in state at the church one hour prior to the funeral. Interment will be in the IOOF Cemetery, Enterprise.

  • Nuke-arms grade stock has been cut by Iran

    Iran has converted three quarters of a nuclear stockpile that it could have turned quickly into weapons-grade uranium into less volatile forms and is well on the way toward transforming the rest, the U.N. atomic agency reported Thursday.
    The development — agreed to by Iran under a nuclear deal it struck late last year with six world powers — leaves Tehran with substantially less of the 20-percent enriched uranium that it would need for a nuclear warhead.
