Sam Pellerite

Sam Pellerite, 93, of Zephyrhills, Florida (formerly of Village Way, Fairmont), passed away Wednesday (June 25, 2014) in Simpsonville, South Carolina, where he had been living with his daughter during his battle with cancer.

Sam was born Nov. 13, 1920, in Fairmont, the son of the late Vincent and Maria (Galiano) Pellerite. He was the loving husband of the late Teresa Mae “Terry” (Cirillo) Pellerite.

Sam grew up on McKinney Street, where he served as an altar boy at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. He was a decorated P-47 fighter pilot during World War II, successfully flying 37 missions over Europe. He served in the Air Force reserves for 21 years and retired as a major.

He was an electrical engineering graduate of West Virginia University and was employed for 17 years at Consolidation Coal Co. and 20 years at Westinghouse Electric Corp.’s Fairmont Lighting Plant. He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus.

After retiring, Sam and Terry became snowbirds, wintering in Zephyrhills, Florida, where he could play golf and she could enjoy the sun and pool during the winter months. He was a volunteer for many years at Fairmont General Hospital and also for Meals on Wheels. Besides golf, he loved playing cards and billiards, and visiting family and friends.

He is survived by a sister, Carmela Gray; a son, Sam Pellerite Jr. and his wife Janet; a daughter, Tina Sims and her husband Sam; grandchildren, Nicole (Pellerite) Rinehart and her husband Scott, Samantha Pellerite, and Vince and Terin Sims; and a great-granddaughter, Olivia Rinehart. He is also survived by a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Bob and Dixie Rowe, and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service is planned for Saturday, Aug. 2, at 11 a.m. at Ross Funeral Home, 801 Fairmont Ave., Fairmont.

Contributions in memory of Sam may be made to the Cancer Survivors Park at in Sam’s name.
