Betty Stevens

Betty Jean Stevens, 82, of Buford, Georgia, and longtime resident of Fairmont, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday (July 4, 2014).

She was born Aug. 5, 1931, to the late Edward and Pearl Arnold of Clarksburg. Betty was one of eight children to the Arnolds. In her teen years, Betty was reared by the late Roy and Cora Trippett of Fairmont.

Betty married the love of her life, the late Kenneth D. Stevens, who brought to this marriage two children: Joann (Richard) Renfro of Detroit, Michigan, and Kenneth (Melinda) Stevens Jr. of Clarksburg.

Betty attended Kelly Miller School in Clarksburg, and was a 1950 graduate of Dunbar High School in Fairmont. After retiring from Hartley’s Department Store in Fairmont, she worked at the Fairmont Bowling Center and volunteered at Fairmont Catholic School in Fairmont.

Betty’s greatest joy was caring for her grandchildren, and she was affectionately called “Nanny” by those closest to her. Betty had a passion for playing bingo and spending time with friends. She deeply enjoyed traveling, a vacation to Walt Disney World with her grandchildren ranking as one of her most favorite trips of her lifetime.

In addition to her parents and spouse, Betty was preceded in death by all seven of the Arnold siblings: Leslie, Lewis, Grace, Doris, Dorothy, Eloise and Elsie; both Trippett siblings, Junior and Thomas; and one grandson, Adam Stevens.

Along with Betty’s children mentioned above, Betty leaves to treasure her memory one loving and devoted granddaughter and caregiver, Crystal Stevens of Buford, Georgia; one grandson, Troy Stevens of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; great-grandchildren, Kendra Fitzpatrick, Justin Stevens, Tre Lewis, Jordan Stevens, Bradley Stevens, Donte Stevens and Trelynn Stevens; great-great-grandchildren, Kayonna Valentine, Amari Fitzpatrick, and Aubriana and Julian Stevens; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.

Family and friends may call at Carpenter & Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont, from noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home at 2 p.m. Wednesday with Pastor Wesley Q. Dobbs officiating. In keeping with the wishes of the deceased, her body will be cremated following the service.
