Richard Pettigrew

Richard Keith Pettigrew, 88, of Fairmont, passed away Friday (July 4, 2014) at the West Virginia Veterans Nursing Facility in Clarksburg.

He was born in Fairmont on Jan. 20, 1926, a son of the late Earl and Fannie (Friend) Pettigrew.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 62 years, Dovie Mae (Hostutler) Pettigrew, in 2013.

He attended East Fairmont High School and the University of Western Kentucky. He served in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in the Pacific during World War II. In his earlier years, he was employed at Singer and Kellogg’s in Ohio. He owned and operated The Goal Post and a used furniture store in Fairmont. He loved to cook and bake, and was an avid Mountaineer and Steeler fan. He and his late wife raised many Yorkie dogs and several cats. He also enjoyed feeding the birds.

He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Joan and Jim Watson of Red Lion, Pennsylvania; and several nieces and nephews.

The family would like to extend special thanks to Linda and Mike Miller of Bridgeport, Diane and Dave Malone of Smithtown, and Richard Ridenour of Fairmont, in addition to the VA Nursing Facility staff for their wonderful care.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Ken Given, Harry Pettigrew, Branty Pettigrew and Don Pettigrew, and his sisters, Thelma Given Linn, Grace Satterfield and Jean Bunner.

In keeping with the wishes of the deceased, his body was donated to the Human Gift Registry at West Virginia University.
