Paul May

Paul Edward May, 87, of Fairmont, passed away Friday (July 11, 2014) at his home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Fairmont on Dec. 28, 1926, a son of the late George A. and Retta (Smith) May.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 49 years, Rutia (Hall) May.

Paul proudly served his country with the U.S. Army during World War II. He began working at May Brothers Co. as a teenager and continued for more than 25 years. He opened May Car Wash in 1968 and continued owning and operating it until his retirement.

He was a member of Gateway United Methodist Church, chairman of the board of Farmer’s Mutual Insurance Co. and a member of the Business and Professionals Bowling League of Fairmont. He enjoyed bowling in his younger years, traveling and spending time with his loving family, especially his grandchildren.

He is survived by one son, David Edward May and his wife Barbara of Fairmont; three grandchildren, Allison Elizabeth May, Laura Erin May and Christopher Edward May; one sister, Mildred Heiskell of Fairmont; and a close friend, Donna Woodburn of Fairmont.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Marie Ellen Eberly and Nan Elizabeth May, and a brother, George W. May.

Family and friends may call at Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont, from 1-8 p.m. today and from 10-11 a.m. Monday. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home at 11 a.m. Monday with Pastor Jeff Mayfield officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Zion Cemetery in Fairmont, where flag-folding honors will be conducted by the Marion County Veterans Council Honor Guard.
