Robert E. Parsons

Rev. Robert E. Parsons died Wednesday (Nov. 14, 2012) in Fort Myers, Fla., after a long illness.

He was born on June 27, 1943, in Fairmont, son of the late Wayne F. and Mary Cowell Parsons.

He graduated from West Fairmont High School in the Class of 1961 and Fairmont State College in 1966.

He graduated with a master’s of divinity from Phillips Graduate Seminary in Enid, Okla., and was a minister for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) serving in Oklahoma, Texas and New Mexico.

He was retired from the Federal General Accounting Office of Washington D.C.

He was an Eagle Scout and was the recipient of the Silver Beaver award for more than 50 years of service with the Boy Scouts of America.

He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Virginia Hupp Parsons of Fort Myers, Fla.; daughter, Terri L. Parsons of Alexandria, Va.; son Robert E. Parsons II of Abingdon,Va.; brother, Donald W. Parsons and wife Mary; sister, Mary Cheryl Carpenter and husband Roger; sister, Brenda Lea Haun and husband James; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Additionally, the family would like to thank close friends Michael Canup, Judi Hunt and Kristen Stuckey.

A memorial service will be held in Fairmont at a future date to be announced.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Diabetes Association, the Boy Scouts of America or Hope Hospice of Fort Myers, Fla.

  • Nuke-arms grade stock has been cut by Iran

    Iran has converted three quarters of a nuclear stockpile that it could have turned quickly into weapons-grade uranium into less volatile forms and is well on the way toward transforming the rest, the U.N. atomic agency reported Thursday.
    The development — agreed to by Iran under a nuclear deal it struck late last year with six world powers — leaves Tehran with substantially less of the 20-percent enriched uranium that it would need for a nuclear warhead.
