Phyllis Cunningham

Phyllis Valerie Cunningham, 86, of Baxter, passed away Tuesday (June 17, 2014) at the Pierpont Center in Fairmont.

She was born in Marion County, on July 31, 1927, a daughter of the late Kenneth Paul and Clarissa (Burnsworth) Helm.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 59 years, Robert “Bob” Cunningham, in August 2005.

Phyllis was a loving homemaker, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. In her earlier years, she worked at the Westinghouse Lamp Plant from 1944-46. She was a member of Three Crosses Ministries and was past president of the Baxter Homemakers Association. She faithfully enjoyed attending Sagebrush Round-Up. She took great pride in the fact that she was one of the first woman firefighters in Marion County with the Baxter Volunteer Fire Department.

She is survived by four sons, Robert Tom Cunningham and his wife Debbie of Rivesville, Charles Eddie Cunningham and his wife Marsha of Farmington, Randy Wayne Cunningham and his wife Karen of Baxter, and Jay Cunningham and his wife Kelly of Baxter; 15 grandchildren, Robert Scott Cunningham, Ron Edward Cunningham, Tonya Leanne Carpenter, Chad McMillion, Jason McMillion, Chris McMillion, Jennifer Hall, Jason Edward Cunningham, Kelly Greathouse, Amanda Andrick, R.D. Harrison, Brent Cunningham, Tra McHenry, Chelsea McHenry and Travis Cunningham; 19 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Janet Claire Cunningham; a grandson, James Randall Cunningham; and two sisters, Juanita Hearn and Rosalee Vincent.

Family and friends may call at Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont, from 2-8 p.m. today and from 10-11 a.m. Thursday. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home at 11 a.m. Thursday with Pastor Keith Lewis officiating. Interment will follow at Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens in Westover.
