Jerald Briggs

Jerald “Jerry” Briggs, 70, of Lumberport, went to be with his Lord on Monday (Jan. 27, 2014).

He was born April 22, 1943, in Altoona, Pa., a son of the late Ardell and Virginia Audrey Decker Briggs.

Jerry is survived by his loving wife, Susie Gallaher Briggs, whom he married Feb. 7, 1986; four children, Jerry Lee, Renee, Debbie and Shawn, all of Ohio; two brothers-in-law, Sandy Gallaher of Ohio and Tommy Gallaher, Lumberport; several cousins-in-law, and nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by a son, Johnny Ray; and was the last surviving member of his immediate family, having also been preceded in death by two sisters and a brother.

Jerry was a sales counselor in the funeral industry, locally at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, and last worked for Walmart for 13 years until his health prevented him from continuing.

He was a Vietnam War veteran, having served in the United States Navy. He was a licensed insurance agent, a member of the Morgantown/Fairmont DAV #45, a life member of VFW Post 573 in Clarksburg, was a talented guitar player, and loved riding his motorcycle.

Most importantly, Jerry was a Christian who dearly loved the Lord and the Bible. He was a member of the Lumberport Baptist Church, where he was a gifted Sunday School teacher, and served as Trustee and Stewardship Team Leader. He loved his church family and will be greatly missed.

Friends may call at the Lumberport Baptist Church on Thursday from 3-8 p.m., where funeral services will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. with Pastor Chad Hutson officiating. Interment will be in the WV National Cemetery at Pruntytown with full military honors. Condolences may be accessed at

  • Nuke-arms grade stock has been cut by Iran

Iran has converted three quarters of a nuclear stockpile that it could have turned quickly into weapons-grade uranium into less volatile forms and is well on the way toward transforming the rest, the U.N. atomic agency reported Thursday.
The development — agreed to by Iran under a nuclear deal it struck late last year with six world powers — leaves Tehran with substantially less of the 20-percent enriched uranium that it would need for a nuclear warhead.
