Marvin Morris Jr.

FAIRMONT — Marvin Morris Jr., 89, of Fairmont, passed away Tuesday (June 14, 2011) at the Arbors at Fairmont.

He was born Nov. 20, 1921, in Monongah, a son of the late Marvin B. and Lillian Scott Morris.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Marion Elizabeth McCown Morris, whom he married on May 30, 1942.

He was a 1939 graduate of Monongah High School and also graduated from West Virginia Business College.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Force from 1942-45. He was in the 5th Air Force and then the Far East Air Force. During World War II, he served in the Pacific for 1 1/2 years in New Guinea and one year in the Philippines. Mr. Morris was present when Gen. Douglas MacArthur returned to the Philippines.

He worked as an accounting clerk for Consolidation Coal Co. for 34 1/2 years and retired from Martinka Mine of the Southern Ohio Coal Co. American Electric Power Co.

Mr. Morris attended Monongah Baptist Church in Monongah.

Mr. Morris is survived by his three sons, Robert M. Morris and his wife Joyce of Fairmont, David A. Morris of Fairmont, and Brett R. Morris and his wife Christine of Kettering, Ohio; three grandchildren, Neely Brown and her husband Ryan of Atlanta, Ga., Ryan Morris and his fiancée Kristin Gilligan of Atlanta, Ga., and Brett “L.B.” Morris of Kettering, Ohio; two great-grandchildren, Emerson Melodie Brown of Atlanta, Ga., and Caden Brown of Palmer, Alaska; and a sister-in-law, Mickey Steele of Kent Island, Md.

In addition to his parents and wife, Mr. Morris was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Melodie Fox Morris; brother, Robert Morris; sister, Lois Jean Hamrick and her husband Guy; and brother-in-law, Donald McCown.

The family of Mr. Morris would like to express its appreciation to the staff of the Arbors at Fairmont for their care during his last illness.

Friends and family may visit Ford Funeral Home, Ford Chapel, 201 Columbia St., Fairmont, from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday. Funeral services will be held in the funeral home at 11 a.m. Friday with Pastor David Huckins officiating. Interment will follow at the West Virginia National Cemetery in Pruntytown.
