Thomas Moran Sr.

Thomas William Moran Sr., 97, of Bunner Ridge Community, Fairmont, passed away Monday (Feb. 3, 2014), at the John Manchin Sr. Healthcare Center.

He was born in Marion County, on March 19, 1916, a son of the late Hezekiah Leroy Moran and Hattie Leland (Musgrove) Moran.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Thelma Louise (Dawson) Moran, in August 2004.

Thomas proudly served his country with the U.S. Army as a military police officer. He started working for his father at the age of 12 delivering groceries at Moran’s Store. He was a mail carrier by trade, retiring from the U.S. Postal Service with 30 years of service. In his earlier years, he also worked for Imperial Ice Cream Co. He was a member of Fairview United Methodist Church and the Bunner Ridge Park Association. He enjoyed farming and gardening.

He is survived by one son, Mark David Moran of Fairmont and his companion Valerie Jordan of Fairmont; one daughter, Karen Louise Diercks of Fairmont; eight grandchildren, William D. Moran and his wife Prasana, John D. Moran and his wife Sheena, Lesina Christina Moran Visgaitus and her husband Joe, Ian Moran, Lauran Elizabeth Moran, David Thomas Diercks, Robert Andrew Diercks, and Cathy Diercks Flynn and her husband Thomas; five great-grandchildren, Danielle Regina Moran, Toni Visgaitus, Tomi Visgaitus, Sean Moran and Ella Moran; and one sister, Vera Moran of Fairmont.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Thomas W. Moran Jr. and his wife Theresa Moran; and three brothers, Robert Moran, Andrew Joseph Moran and Hezekiah Moran.

Family and friends may call at Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont, from 1-8 p.m. Friday and from 10-11 a.m. Saturday. The funeral service will be held in the funeral home at 11 a.m. Saturday with Pastor Rex Musgrove officiating. Interment will follow at Mount Nebo Cemetery in Marion County, where full military honors will be conducted by the Marion County Veterans Council Honor Guard.

  • Nuke-arms grade stock has been cut by Iran

    Iran has converted three quarters of a nuclear stockpile that it could have turned quickly into weapons-grade uranium into less volatile forms and is well on the way toward transforming the rest, the U.N. atomic agency reported Thursday.
    The development — agreed to by Iran under a nuclear deal it struck late last year with six world powers — leaves Tehran with substantially less of the 20-percent enriched uranium that it would need for a nuclear warhead.
