Pieter Blood

Pieter Hallie Blood, 70, of Fairmont, passed away Wednesday (Feb. 12, 2014) at Fairmont General Hospital.

He was born April 22, 1943, in Eugene, Ore., son of the late Raymond H. and Marge (Burkhart) Blood.

Pieter’s lifelong passion was aviation. Becoming a certified pilot and aviation mechanic after high school, he spent many years operating an air taxi service out of Seattle, Wash., running shuttles to Las Vegas, Nev., and Canada. Pete served in the National Guard and U.S. Forest Service for a number of years.

He returned to Oregon to take over the Blood family farming business. It was there he began his life as a family man, marrying his wife of 38 years and raising four loving sons. Pete rounded out his career as an aerospace education administrator, first for several years in Saudi Arabia and Dubai, and later for over a decade as the director of Fairmont State’s Robert C. Byrd National Aerospace Education Center. He was also a member of the National Aviation Fraternity-Alpha Eta Rho. Pieter was an avid musician, his love of music leading him to perform as a member of Oregon’s Eugene Highlanders Bagpipe band for over two decades.

Pieter was Catholic by faith and a former member of St. Peter the Fisherman Church. He is survived by his wife, Donna (McKenna) Blood of Fairmont; four sons, Andy Blood of Los Angeles, Calif., Matthew Blood of Morgantown, Nick Blood of Atlanta, Ga., and Patrick Blood of Fairmont; two sisters, Nikki Strahota of Sarasota, Fla., and RayNora Hannie of Oregon.

Cremation has been chosen as Pieter’s final disposition. A memorial service will be held at Domico Funeral Home, 414 Gaston Ave. in Fairmont, at 3 p.m. Sunday.
