Angela Scotchel

Angela Dominique Scotchel, 25, of Westover, peacefully passed Friday (Feb. 21, 2014) in her home.

Angela was born July 15, 1988 to Joseph (Joe) and Constance (Connie) Scotchel in Morgantown.

She was a graduate of University High School in 2006, where she received academic and athletic scholarships. After graduating high school, she continued her dream in basketball, and attended Fairmont State, where she received a full basketball scholarship and was on the Dean’s List.

She is survived by her parents; her sister, Teressa and husband Barry. Her maternal grandparents are Richard and Gloria Helm, and her paternal grandparents are Frances Scotchel and the late John C. Scotchel.

From her childhood, she had a passion for basketball. With her passion she began playing basketball with various teams such as Dairy Queen, City Crane, WV Hornets, Meteors and WV Tornadoes. She also enjoyed playing T-ball and softball for Wes Mon, but her real passion was basketball.

Angela’s love for basketball was larger than life. She began her basketball career at the age of 7 under the guidance Ben “Benjie” Bradley and Tom Dennison. They took her under their wings and taught her the fundamentals. She was honored with many awards from her basketball career from 1996 to 2007. In 2003-2004, she made the all-conference team at University High School. In 2004-2005, she made first-team All-State and was an elite member of the 1,000-point club with 1,037 total points.

Aside from basketball, her other talents included playing instruments, trumpet, violin and piano. She took dance lessons from Mindy’s School of Dance, and karate lessons from White Eagle. She enjoyed going swimming and taking summer vacations with her friends and family.

To know Angela, you would know that she had a heart of gold. She always had a smile on her face, with dimples that would light up the room. She would always put others before herself, and would do anything for anybody. Angela will be sadly missed by her family, friends and a host of teammates.

Funeral arrangements are handled by McCulla Funeral Home. Friends and family are invited to visit Kingdom Evangelist Church on Fairmont Road in Westover. Viewing will be on Monday at Kingdom Evangelist Methodist Church, 540 Fairmont Road, Westover, from 5-9 p.m. and also on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service with Pastor Kevin Cain officiating. Burial will follow at East Oak Grove Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Angela Scotchel Basketball Fund at Fairmont Federal Credit Union.
