Leo DeMary

Leo DeMary, 90, of Rivesville, passed away Thursday (Feb. 20, 2014) at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Marion County on March 30, 1923, a son of the late Pete and Nancy (Colarusso) DeMary.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Margaret (Stetar) DeMary, in 2000.

Leo was co-owner and operator of DeMary’s Market in Rivesville with his three brothers. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church in Fairmont. He was a 1943 graduate of Rivesville High School, where he was a member of the 1942 All-County Scholastic Team and All-Mason Dixon in football. He took great pride in and loved his hometown of Rivesville, serving on town council for several years. He loved life and people. He was always doing for others. He enjoyed spending time with his family. He was particularly fond of his place by the river.

In his earlier years, he spent time with his wife and family at Big Bear Lake. His pride and joy was driving his 1970 Gold Chevelle “Goldie” in all the local parades.

He is survived by one son, Gary Leo DeMary and his wife Barbara of Fairmont; one daughter, Rita DeMary Uveges and her husband John C. of Rivesville; four grandchildren, Johnna Uveges and her fiancé Zach Martin of Fairmont, Miki DeMary-Andrew and her husband Tim, Heather Monell and her husband Phil, and Crystal Heldreth and her husband Frank; and four great-grandchildren, Brittany Barber, Brent Barber, Kelsey Monell and Jacob Monell.

Also surviving are two brothers, his twin, Fred DeMary, with whom he had a special bond, and his wife Mary Jane of Rivesville, and John DeMary and his wife Sue of Rivesville; a sister-in-law, Ruth DeMary of Rivesville; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Joe DeMary.

Family and friends may call at Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant St., Fairmont, today from 1-8 pm. A vigil service will be held in the funeral home this evening at 7:30 with Fr. Walter Jagela officiating. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church in Fairmont on Monday, at 10 a.m., with Fr. Richard Ulam, OSB officiating.  Interment will follow at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Fairmont.
