George W. “Grumpy” Smallwood Jr., 69, of Fairmont, passed from this life in his home under Hospice Care after a long illness Thursday (Feb. 20, 2014).
He was born in Fairmont on July 19, 1944, a son of the late George Wm. and Aleatha May Wolfe Smallwood.
George was an over-the-road independent self-employed truck driver with the CB handle “Crowbar.” He was a former member of the Teamsters Union. He was Protestant by faith and attended the Mt. Sharon Free Methodist Church. He enjoyed camping and fishing, did a little gambling on occasion and enjoyed visiting with family and friends.
Mr. Smallwood is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Devona Ann “Bonnie” LeMasters Smallwood; one daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly Ann Rager and husband Randy of Bunner Ridge; two sons and daughters-in-law, Roger Kent Smallwood and wife Melissa of Benton Ferry and Keith William Smallwood and wife Mary of Fairmont; two brothers, Aaron Smallwood and wife Lori of North Carolina, and Vaughn Smallwood of Kansas City; one sister, Linda Darlene Neel of Fairmont; seven grandchildren, JoAnna McBee (Rich), Jason Rager (Beth), Keith Smallwood Jr. (Jessica), Kenneth Smallwood (Summer), Crystal, Kyle and Andrew Smallwood; two great-grandchildren, Mason Smallwood and Rylee Rager; and also several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers-in-law, Phyllis and Jerry Neel and Steve Neel.
Friends may call at the Frey Home For Funerals (Addition Chapel A), 320 Madison St., today from 2-8 p.m. and Monday from 10-11 a.m. Services will be held in the funeral home Monday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Rex Musgrove officiating. Interment will follow at the Grandview Memorial Gardens.
