Phil Snyder

A memorial service for Phillip “Phil” Stanley Snyder will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at First United Methodist Church in downtown Shreveport, La., with a reception to follow at the church.

A burial service will be held at a later date in Fairmont.

Phil was born March 19, 1944, in Fairmont and entered his eternal home Friday (Sept. 20, 2013) after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl Jackson Snyder and Margaret Kerfoot Snyder; and his sister, Margaret Emily Snyder.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Linda Snyder; his daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Michael Rogers of Lexington, Ky.; his son and daughter-in-law, Jim and Susan Snyder of Shreveport; his grandchildren, Brown and Hart Snyder of Shreveport and Liam and Maggie Rogers of Lexington; his brother and sister-in-law, Jack and Carolyn Snyder; and the mother of his children, Jane Snyder.

Phil graduated from West Virginia University in 1966 and continued his master’s education at Bowling Green State University. He started his business career in 1966 with Owens-Illinois/Libbey Glass, which brought him to Shreveport, where he served as plant manager from 1983 to 1992.

Phil served as senior vice president of operations for McElroy Metals Inc. from 1992 to 1999. In 1999, he purchased G&C Honda and grew the ATV and motorcycle business to include three locations in Shreveport, Hammond and New Orleans, La.

Over the years, Phil was a member of many business boards and commissions, including: Manufacturing Managers’ Council, Shreveport Chamber of Commerce, Committee of 100, and the Louisiana Recreational and Used Motor Vehicle Commission.

Phil loved life and took advantage of every moment he was given. He was a tenacious problem solver who wouldn’t rest until an issue was resolved. He had a passion for building things. He liked to see an idea go from conception to completion, whether it was a new dollhouse or a new business. He loved his home state of West Virginia. He was a talented athlete — a tennis and basketball champion in high school and an avid golfer later in life. He loved his family and friends and would drop anything he was doing to help them. He had a special place in his heart for his dogs who will miss his love and companionship. Phil lived a full, wonderful life and those of us who loved him were blessed to be part of his life’s journey.

Phil’s family would like to express their gratitude to Drs. Dan Moller, Robert Nicholson and Andy Marsala for the help and loving kindness shown to Phil and the family.

In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

  • Nuke-arms grade stock has been cut by Iran

Iran has converted three quarters of a nuclear stockpile that it could have turned quickly into weapons-grade uranium into less volatile forms and is well on the way toward transforming the rest, the U.N. atomic agency reported Thursday.
The development — agreed to by Iran under a nuclear deal it struck late last year with six world powers — leaves Tehran with substantially less of the 20-percent enriched uranium that it would need for a nuclear warhead.
