Maxine Tonkery

Maxine Ruth Tonkery, 84, of Fairmont, passed from this life Sunday (Sept. 22, 2013) at Fairmont General Hospital after a long illness.

She was born in Fairmont on Nov. 13, 1928, a daughter of the late Paul and Viola Mathews Patton.

She was a Christian by faith and before she became ill several years ago, she was a fun-loving lady who enjoyed having a good time with her friends and family. She was a member of the Eldora Homemakers Club, the T.N.T. club and a bowling league. She enjoyed cooking and baking for her family, especially around holidays. She especially enjoyed visiting with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Other activities she enjoyed included sewing, knitting, crocheting and embroidery, also reading, watching football (Dallas Cowboys and WVU), Matlock, “Jeopardy” and “Wheel of Fortune.”

Mrs. Tonkery is survived by her loving husband of 64 years, Robert E. Tonkery, whom she married May 17, 1949; four daughters and sons-in-law, Peggy and Jr. Miller of Grafton, Pamela and Alan Boylan of Fairmont, Patricia and David McDougal of Fairmont, and Paula and Barry Balon of Bridgeport; two sons and daughters-in-law, Mark and Nancy Tonkery of Grafton, and Matthew and Dianne Tonkery of Bridgeport; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and also one sister-in-law, Betty Patton of Ohio.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister-in-law, Gilbert and Maxine Patton and Ralph Patton, and her two sisters and brothers-in-law, Juanita and Bill Lopez and Pauline and Vernon Crandall. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

Her family would like to say a special “Thank You” to her primary caregiver, Dottie Shamblin, the nurses of Hospice Care, the staff at the Dialysis Center and Becky Sherry, who would come to her home to help her look her best.

Friends may call at Frey Home For Funerals (Historic Chapel), 320 Madison St., Fairmont, from 2-8 p.m. Wednesday and from 10 a.m. until noon Thursday. Services will be held in the funeral home at noon Thursday with Evangelist Kevin Lough officiating. Interment will follow at the Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens.

  • Nuke-arms grade stock has been cut by Iran

Iran has converted three quarters of a nuclear stockpile that it could have turned quickly into weapons-grade uranium into less volatile forms and is well on the way toward transforming the rest, the U.N. atomic agency reported Thursday.
The development — agreed to by Iran under a nuclear deal it struck late last year with six world powers — leaves Tehran with substantially less of the 20-percent enriched uranium that it would need for a nuclear warhead.
